In the 2017 the road fatalities by car accidents have been significantly decreasing however fatalities pace among cyclists are still increasing. In 2017, in European countries such as Netherlands where cycling is widely used mean of transport casualties among cyclist is greater than among cars ( 206 people died on bicycles and 201 in cars). The most common factor causing cyclist accidents is associated with road users that failed to pay attention to the others. In BIKERS, we propose a digital solution BIKERS BEKIND (Biker Ecological Kinematic Interpreter Device) that warns car drivers of bike`s change of direction anticipated by the interpretation biker`s body movements. In BIKERS project we set the following objectives: 1) to develop an in-car assistant that leverages on the anticipation of biker’s intention to plan proper intervention and to activate effective verbal training ; 2) to anticipate biker’s intention from detected body movements through logistic regression models; 3) to improve infrared RefleX camera detector of reflective markers and integrate it with traditional vision systems in order to reliably assess body movements. The BIKERS BEKIND solution, thanks to its self-consistency, can be immediately adopted in conventional vehicles and also in support to sensing of autonomous car with higher level of autonomy. This guarantees effectiveness in the context of the changing automated transport system. Further, the education and training schemes provided in-car by the digital solution improve the awareness of transport users’ safety in everyday driving. The resulting technological solution is exploited as self-reliant BIKERS BEKIND product for safety in vehicles. Further we intend to exploit new simulation model of cyclists in driving simulation and new standards for visibility aids specifically designed to emphasis cyclists’ body movements. We aim to co-design these three results together with a stakeholder panel of actors in road safety.
